So the voting is over and the winner is "Scarface". That's right it seems that this movie about Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who climbs up the ladder of crime in Miami, has touched you guys more than any other movie with Al Pacino. Well, my choice was "People I Know", but about that a bit later. So "Scarface", great choice. Indeed this is a classic example of what a gangster movie has to be.
About a guy who went from nothing to everything and back to nothing. My first experience of watching Scarface was in childhood, of course. I was about 5 years old then and I remember sneaking into my father's cabinet (sorry Dad, I guess you' ll forgive me now :-) ) and there it was this VHS (yeah that's right there where no DVDs back then) with a stunning black and white cover and a writing on it which said "He loved the American dream. With a vengeance". I mean, when you are 5 and you see this, what do you do? You take it and watch it, right? Despite all the blood and violence in it or may be due to this violence, watching this movie was the greatest impression I had in my childhood (along the beating I once got from my father for misbehaving. It was harsh!!!).
As usual I wouldn't go into a detailed review of the story-line or the cast. That will be pointless. Just know that if you haven't seen this movie yet, you should just to have an exposure to what I will call "True cinema". Indeed when we think of movies right now and to be more specific, movies labelled as "gangster or crime movies", you will never find a movie in the 21st century that is as "jam - packed" with cult scenes as this one. I mean just take a look at this scene, I doubt that a guy like Jude Law (or any other phony actor you have out there) can pull out a stunning performance such as this one.
I mean, have you ever seen a performance that good before? I have, and it was again in "Scarface". I guess what I'm trying to say is that this movie here is a shocker from the beginning to the end and all this done in 1983!!! Crazy, right? Moreover the movie goes on giving us lessons of life all through the scenes we see (gangster - style, of course). Just take a look at this one where Tony Montana (Al Pacino) gives his friend a lesson on how to pick up girls and says "In this country my friend, if you want the pussy, you got to have the money. Because when you've got the money, you get the power and when you've got the power you get any pussy you want". Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself.
Insane, right? I guess you won't get Ewan McGregor or Brad Pitt to pull out a performance such as this one. Of course if you disagree with me you are free to send in a link with a scene higher than that in quality (I really dare you). So let's move on with more classic stuff. You know gangsters are not all that into girls, as you may think after watching the clip above. In Scarface, Al Pacino plays the role of a real bad ass gangster. I mean, have you ever seen this scene?
No comment guys. It's completely "bonkers". Wow effect guaranteed, even now that we have access to all this violence on TV, Internet and so on, you still jump with thrills whenever you see Tony shooting down that cop, don't you? In short,I guess it's needless to say that "Scarface" is a winner with merit. Anyone who hasn't watched this movie, remember, "it's never too late" or "it's better late than never". So get your groove on and enjoy the movie.
My choice is "Scent Of Woman".
ReplyDeleteOh yeah definetly a must be!!!! Don't know why I forgot about it:-) should've put it in place of "Heat":-)
